A working smoke detector alerted a mother and baby mid-afternoon recently to their dishwasher on fire.

It took crews from Mernda, Doreen and South Morang around 30 mins to get the fire under control and to remove the dishwasher in Waterview Drive, Mernda.

A Mernda volunteer firefighter said he was happy to arrive on scene to find the mother and baby safe and well at the neighbour’s house awaiting their arrival.
“It was great to see a working smoke detector did its job alerting the residents, giving them time to escape safely,” Lt Weedon said.
Last year in Victoria 43 home fires were cause by faulty dishwashers.
