At 11.44am this morning we were paged to a Motor Vehicle Collision on the Calder Freeway north of the Romsey turnoff. When we arrived we discovered an all-whitey mess, with both outbound lanes of the Calder covered in a thick layer of paint. A large transport truck had run into the rear of a VicRoads contractor painting lines on the freeway, at high speed. The impact pushed the paint truck over the armco barrier. Fortunately no-one was seriously injured, but the truck driver and several VicRoads contractors were taken to hospital. Whilst at this scene, we were paged to a truck leaking diesel just around the corner on Romsey Road. We then returned to the freeway to continue watching paint dry, as huge tow trucks were needed to lift both trucks. VicRoads tell us that it will take more than 12 hours for the paint to dry, before it can be removed. Traffic on the Calder will be reduced to one lane until then.
