Just before 4pm yesterday afternoon Woodend CFA was called to a 15 tonne bin fire at Barker Trailers in North Woodend, with explosions. On arrival Woodend Captain discovered the huge bin containing used paint tins had caught fire. He immediately called for extra tankers, after hearing the Woodend Pumper had turned out and arrived on scene soon after. This was quickly followed by two tankers from Newham and two tankers from Woodend. The initial attack was to cool the fire, while volunteers donned breathing apparatus to enable a more direct attack into the fire. It was quickly contained and eventually extinguished using foam. A final check with Woodend’s Thermal Imaging Camera showed no hot spots, and the BA operators undertook decontamination procedures due to the toxic nature of the contents. It was also a good test of the Barker Trailers hydrant system, with the Pumper eventually setting up on the system and tankers filled from it. A good job by all.
