The Amazing Muirs
This is a new feature of our monthly article - to introduce you to some of the volunteer members of the Woodend CFA, and we’re starting with the Muir family.
The Muir name first became involved with the Woodend Fire Brigade in 1930, when Ben Muir joined and he would later serve as a Foreman and Lieutenant up to 1947. His brother Alec joined in 1932.
The more recent Muir lineage started in 1979 when young David joined. He was followed by his father Graham ‘Bluey’ (who was a nephew of the 1930s Ben and Alec) and then Graham’s cousin Jim. It will come as no surprise that all were involved in fighting the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983.
Jim Muir was secretary for more than ten years, and also coach of the Junior Fire Brigade. Bluey, who is still involved in the brigade as one of the most experienced drivers, worked as for the Produce Store and is now retired to the bowling club.
Dave, who works for the Shire, is currently 2nd Lieutenant and has been an officer for more than ten years. He was very involved in the running team, and in 1988 won the Victorian Championship Hydrant Race (against 108 competitors) to become the first Woodend runner to win an individual event at State level.
Last year, Dave and Graham received their 25 year service medals from the CFA. David’s wife Liz was also involved with the Ladies Auxiliary, for many years as treasurer, and received her 12 year medal. While Graham’s wife Bev is another long-serving Muir, still involved with the Ladies Auxiliary.
The 4th generation includes Dave’s daughter Jade and son Ben. 20 year old Jade, who is working in childcare in Woodend, is now in her fourth year as a member. While 18 year old Ben. who works at the sawmill, started as a junior when he was eleven, and has represented the Victorian CFA running team at a meet in Tasmania.
That’s an amazing 76 years of service to our community by the Muir clan.
