On Sunday 9th March we were called to Springfield to assist with some hay bales that had caught on fire. The problem with the big round bales of hay is that they need to be unrolled and spread out so that they can be fully extinguished. The CFA brigades worked with a team of front end loaders to separate the good bales from the burning ones, before the extinguishing work could be done. The work was made more difficult as the fire started at dusk and went into the night. Thanks to Mitch Hobbs for the photo.

It was a sad story, as the farmer had recently lost much of his grazing pasture in the major fire in the area, and this hay was going to be used to feed the stock. The fire started when his young daughter was riding her mini-bike in a paddock and the hot exhaust ignited the dry grass.
